Gender of the nouns (Gènere dei Nomi)

The nouns in Venetan are either of masculine or of feminine gender.

Generally, the masculine is marked by the ending -o or consonant in singular, and the feminine by -a, cf.:

Nouns in -l, -e, -ista or derived from adjectives can be either masculine or feminine or be common-gender nouns

In the three central Venetan provinces (Vicenza, Padova, Rovigo) singular nouns still end in -re , -le instead of -r, -l.

el ségno the sign : i signi the signs,
el sécio the pail : i sici the pails
el dotor the doctor : i duturi the doctors
el moménto the moment : i muminti the moments
         
Nouns in -l

  -i   el giornal the newspaper : i giornali the newspapers
la vocal the vowel : le vocali the vowels
el / la cantante the singer : i / le cantanti the singers
 
Note that at extreme east (Venice) and extreme west (Verona) the ending -i doesn't produce vowel change and in the north (Belluno) the plural often has no -i ending, showing the pure stem as in the singular.
