Note that the vowels are nasalized before m and n. The tilde (~) is used to mark the nasalized pronunciation of the stressed vowels before another vowel or at the end of the words. The cedile (,) is used under the letter c to mark its pronunciation as [s] in front of a, o and u.

Three other letters -- K (kapa), W (vê dobrado) and Y (i grego) -- are used in names and words of foreign origin.
