Pepin the Short († 768)

Encyclopædia Orbis Latini

King of the Franks (751-68) after overthrowing the Merovingians.

The son of Charles Martel, Pepin founded the Carolingian dynasty and was crowned king by St Boniface. He checked Lombard expansion and in 756 presented Pope Stephen II with the territories around Ravenna--the nucleus of the papal states. His son Charlemagne inherited the Frankish kingdom in 771.
