Compound Tenses (Tempos
Compostos)
The compound tenses in Portuguese are formed with the auxiliary
verbs ter to
have or haver
to
have and the past
passive participle. The forms with haver are limited to
the written language only.
Note that the participle is invariable and never agree in number neither
in gender with the Subject of the Verb,
cf.:
Eles têm vindo. They (men) have
come.
Elas têm vindo. They (women) have come.
Unlike in English, the compound temporal form is never to be divided by
an adverb. One may say:
Nunca hei visto or Não hei visto nunca. I
have never seen.
