The
Present Stem
The circumflected accents
are used to mark the vowels' length.
Generally, the present stem coincides
with the root (eventually extended by a thematic vowel), as in:
-
amâ- to
love
-
delê- to
destroy
-
leg-
to read
-
cupi- to
long for
-
audî- to
hear
There are a few verbs that modify their
present stem by:
-
infixation (insertion
of a nasal -n- in the root) as in:
tag- : tango,
vic- : vinco;
-
reduplication of the
first consonant followed by -i- as in:
gen- : gigno;
-
suffixation (by adding
the suffix -sc- to the root) (see Inchoative verbs) as in:
flore- : floresco.
