Compound Tenses (Tempi Composti)

 
 
The compound tenses in Italian are constructed with the auxiliaries avere to have or essere to be and the past participle.

All the transitive verbs are conjugated with avere.

All the verbs used reflexively or reciprocally are conjugated with essere, cf.:

A few intransitive verbs (denoting motion or change in the state) are also conjugated with essere:
 
  • andare to go  
  • apparire to appear 
  • cadere to fall  
  • discendere to go down, descend  
  • diventare to become  
  • morire to die  
  • nascere to be born  
  • parere to seem, appear, look 
  • partire to depart 
  • rimanere to go  
  • salire to get in  
  • tornare to return  
  • uscire to get out  
  • venire to come  

The impersonal verbs are also conjugated with essere:

Some verbs may be conjugated either with essere or avere according to the different usages: In the case of the verbs conjugated with avere, the past participle agrees with any preceding direct object.

In the case of the verbs conjugated with essere the past participle agrees with the subject.
