Note: The 3rd p. forms egli, esso (pl. essi) and ella, essa (pl. esse) are used in the written language only; egli and ella denotes only persons, while esso and essa (pl. essi, esse) refer to both persons and things. The tonic object forms are used with prepositions: per me, di te, a lui etc. The forms meco, teco, seco, now used in poetry only, inherit the classical Latin forms mecum, tecum, secum. The same phenomenon is preserved in modern Spanish and Portuguese also.

Note: The pronouns codesto, -a, -i, -e are used in the spoken language with a pejorative meaning. The pronouns questi, quegli, colui, costui refer only to persons.
