Mayor of the palace of Austrasia (the eastern Frankish kingdom).
After
the death (714) of his father Pepin of Herstal, Charles, an illegitimate
son, competed for the succession with Pepin's widow, Plectrude, who was
regent for her grandsons. Successful by 719, Charles extended his rule
over all the Franks. In 732 near Poitiers, he defeated the invading Muslims.
